Discover the stunning colors of the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain on an unforgettable full-day adventure from Cusco. This scenic Andean experience offers breathtaking mountain landscapes, colorful rainbow peaks, stone forests, and fewer crowds than the classic Rainbow Mountain route.

The short and easy walk makes Palccoyo perfect for travelers seeking incredible high-altitude views without a difficult hike. Experience traditional Andean villages, herds of alpacas, and panoramic scenery surrounded by the majestic Andes Mountains of Peru.

Unlike Vinicunca, Palccoyo shows you three rainbow-colored peaks side by side, instead of just one. The mountains are striped in vivid shades of red, yellow, pink, purple, and green — the result of mineral-rich sediments deposited millions of years ago when the area was covered by water. It's quieter, less crowded, and the hike is significantly easier.

PALCCOYO MOUNTAIN TOUR FAQs

Here some frequently asked question about our day tours in Cusco

What is Palccoyo Mountain?

Palccoyo is a lesser-known alternative to the famous Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain. It offers a quieter, more serene experience with stunning vibrant colors without the crowds, and features three rainbow-colored mountain peaks, a Red River, and views of the sacred Ausangate summit Cusco's highest mountain.

Where is it and how far is it from Cusco?

The tour begins with an early morning pickup around 7:00 AM from your hotel in Cusco, followed by a roughly 3.5-hour drive through the South Sacred Valley. Part of that drive is on a bumpy dirt road for approximately 45 minutes as you near the mountain.

What is the altitude of Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain?

Palccoyo Mountain sits at approximately 4,900 meters (16,070 feet) above sea level. We recommend spending at least 2 days acclimatizing in Cusco before the tour to reduce the effects of altitude sickness.

How difficult is the hike?

The trailhead starts at 4,700 m (15,400 ft) and peaks around 4,900 m (16,076 ft). The round-trip hike is about 1.5 to 2 hours total. The tour is rated easy to moderate, so travelers of any age can do it if they move slowly and take breaks

What about altitude sickness?

Palccoyo is more than 4,900 meters above sea level, so it's important to prepare. The best way is by arriving in Cusco at least three days before your visit. You can also help your body adjust by drinking coca tea or chewing coca leaves, which are available in most hotels and restaurants in Cusco. Tour guides typically carry coca leaves and small oxygen tanks, if you feel unwell, let them know immediately.

What is included in the tour?

The tour typically includes round-trip transport from Cusco, breakfast and lunch, and personal expenses are not included unless stated.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit is during the dry season — from March to November. During the rainy season, the trail is slippery and the mountain is mostly covered in snow. The vivid colors reveal themselves most brilliantly during the dry season, from April to October.

What should I pack for Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour?

Wear layered clothing: thermal layers, a windproof/waterproof jacket, a warm hat, and gloves. Good hiking shoes are essential. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen. Also bring snacks, a reusable water bottle, and your camera to capture the stunning landscapes. Bring enough local cash (Soles), entrance fees, toilets, and snacks can only be paid in cash.

How far in advance should I book the tour?

We strongly recommend booking at least 2 to 3 days in advance, especially during peak travel season (May to September). Spots are limited and fill up fast, so early booking guarantees your place.

How much does it cost?

A group tour typically starts at around 144 Soles (approximately $38 USD) per person, which usually includes pick-up and drop-off, transport, breakfast, and lunch. The entrance fee to Palccoyo Mountain is 25 Peruvian Soles, paid separately. Tips for guides and drivers are optional and at your discretion.

What time does the tour depart from Cusco?

Pick-up from hotels in Cusco typically begins between 4:00 AM and 5:00 AM to ensure you arrive at Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain during the best light and before the afternoon crowds gather.

Is it suitable for children and beginners?

The tour has no strict age limits, but it's suggested that children be at least 6 years old, as younger children often struggle with the cold and high altitude. If bringing a child, dress them warmly and arrive in Cusco at least three days early to acclimatize.
